The most common hanging mistake is hanging too high. Pictures drift toward the ceiling, the room feels disconnected and visitors have to crane their necks. The fix is a single number that galleries and museums have used for decades.
The 57-inch rule
Hang art so its center sits 57 inches above the floor. That's roughly average eye level. Some designers use 58 to 60 inches in rooms with tall ceilings. Whatever you choose, use it everywhere in the house, and your walls will feel quietly coordinated.
Finding the nail height
The center height isn't where the nail goes. You need to account for the hanging wire:
- Measure the frame's height and divide it by two.
- Pull the wire taut toward the top and measure from the wire's peak down to the top of the frame. That's the wire drop.
- Nail height = 57 + (frame height ÷ 2) − wire drop.

Move the sliders and the nail height updates, with a little wall to preview it.
Above sofas, beds and sideboards
Furniture changes the rule. Art should relate to the piece beneath it, so leave 8–10 inches between the furniture and the bottom of the frame, and aim for art that's about two-thirds the width of the furniture. Above a bed, keep it high enough that heads won't knock the frame.
Gallery walls
- Treat the whole group as one picture and center it at 57 inches.
- Keep 2–3 inches between frames, and keep the spacing consistent.
- Cut kraft-paper templates of each frame, mark the nail point on each and tape them up first.
- Anchor the arrangement with the largest piece slightly off-center, then build outward.
Special care for works on paper
Prints, drawings and watercolors are light-sensitive. Hang them away from direct sun, use UV-filtering glazing and acid-free mats, and avoid exterior walls that get damp. More on that in collecting artists' prints.
Questions
How high should art be hung?
Galleries center artwork at 57 to 60 inches from the floor, which is average human eye level. For a group, center the whole arrangement at that height.
How far above a sofa should art hang?
Leave roughly 8 to 10 inches between the top of the sofa back and the bottom of the frame, and make the art about two-thirds the width of the sofa.
How much space between frames in a gallery wall?
Two to three inches between frames keeps a grouping reading as one unit.
