Date Night in Bisbee: The Art Walk

How to spend an evening on Bisbee's gallery walk: where to start in Old Bisbee, how to pace Main Street, Subway Street and Brewery Gulch, and tips for an art-filled date night.

Main Street in Bisbee, Arizona, in 1940

Old Bisbee's galleries cluster along a few steep, winding blocks tucked into the Mule Mountains, which makes the town one of the best places in Arizona for an art-filled evening on foot. Here's how to plan one.

Start early, park once

Arrive before sunset, park once and walk. Old Bisbee's streets are narrow, and the walk is half the pleasure: stairways climb between houses stacked up the canyon walls, and the old brick commercial buildings glow at dusk.

A loose route

Main StreetThe spine of the old town, lined with galleries, studios and shops in turn-of-the-century storefronts. Work your way uphill.
Subway StreetRunning parallel just above Main, a quieter street of small studios and galleries, where this studio's own storefront used to be.
Brewery GulchBisbee's historic saloon street. Stop for a drink and a bite between galleries.
Back down at duskCatch the last open studios and listen for live music spilling out of doorways.

Making it a date

  • Give each other a budget. Each of you picks one small work under a set price for the other. It turns browsing into a game.
  • Ask the artists questions. Many art-walk venues are working studios, and artists are often there in person.
  • End with dinner on Main and compare favorites.

Bring the art home

If you buy a work on paper, our print-collecting guide and hanging guide will help it look its best. For a fuller picture of the town's art scene, see the Bisbee art guide.

Questions

When is the Bisbee art walk?

Bisbee has a long tradition of a monthly evening gallery walk on the second Saturday. Schedules and participating galleries change, so check local listings for the current date before you go.

Is Old Bisbee walkable?

Yes, though it's hilly and sits at about 5,300 feet. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water and a light layer, as evenings cool quickly.
